PRODUCT DATA

CH2O's SELECTA-MEEN products are aqueous combinations of neutralizing amines and filming amines designed to prevent corrosion in the steam and condensate system. These products have been developed, tested, and proven to provide outstanding corrosion protection. SELECTA-MEEN products are designed for specific applications. The amine types and ratios required for treatment are determined by system analysis. Parameters analyzed include system pressure and design, make-up and return condensate quality, and steam utilization and flow rates. Volatile amines are usually added to boiler feed water. When an amine is not directly added to feed water it may be injected into the steam header. If the amine does not distribute evenly throughout the system, satellite injection is needed to ensure complete protection. However, simple feed water addition can be used if the proper blend is selected.

PRODUCT APPLICATION

Acid corrosion to condensate systems is due, primarily, to carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is present as a result of the decomposition of boiler water carbonate and bicarbonate alkalinities. The decomposition product carbon dioxide exits the boiler as a gas with the steam. Then as the steam condenses it redissolves in the liquid condensate to form carbonic acid.

Carbonic Acid Formation
CO2 + H2O ----> H2CO3

Volatile neutralizing amines are applied to either the feed water (after deaeration), the steam drum, or the steam header to prevent this corrosive attack.

Carbonic Acid Neutralization by Volatile Amine
2R-NH4OH + H2CO3CO ----> (R-NH4)2CO3 + H2O

The SELECTA-MEEN series of products feature differing distribution ratios to provide uniform protection throughout the system. Early in its development, CH2O recognized that simple formulas could not provide the greatest protection for steam and return condensate lines. Using the best ratios of multiple components provides excellent performance in a broad spectrum of applications. CH2O's SELECTA-MEEN formulas are recognized as the finest group of products available for neutralization of carbonic acid.

OXYGEN CONTROL

Corrosion in the steam and condensate system can also be caused by oxygen. Oxygen may be present as a result of an inadequate oxygen control program in the boiler or air introduced through leaks in the system. In systems with excessive oxygen, the use of neutralizing amines may not provide adequate protection. A SELECTA-MEEN product utilizing a volatile filming amine is designed to solve this problem. The filming amine will condense with water to form a barrier between the condensate and the system metal so that corrosion cannot occur.
